Sri Lanka approves import of 70,000 tonnes of rice

Sri Lanka has approved the import of 70,000 tonnes of rice to address the ongoing shortage, particularly of Nadu rice, which has been affecting the market. The Cabinet made this decision on November 20, 2024, with the goal of importing the rice by December 15. The imports will be managed through government-run entities, Lanka Sathosa and the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation, in an effort to stabilize the supply and reduce the pressure on prices.

This move is part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the rice scarcity in the country, which has impacted both consumers and the broader economy.
