Storm alert in Bay of Bengal - Heavy rain likely in southern states
22-Nov-2024 11:11 AM
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a storm alert for the Bay of Bengal, forecasting a low-pressure area to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal around November 23. This development is likely to bring heavy rains to southern parts of India.
Areas most affected include southern Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam, where heavy rainfall is expected on November 26 and 27.
The low-pressure area may intensify into a depression, moving westward and north-westward, leading to more rainfall over the central Bay of Bengal in the coming days. In addition, a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin region could enhance the storm’s impact.
Intermittent heavy rains have been ongoing in Tamil Nadu, potentially leading to flood-like conditions. The storm’s progression could also affect the sowing of Rabi crops, especially in the rain-affected regions of southern Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Torrential rains are expected to continue, with warnings of extremely heavy rains in Rayalaseema on November 26 and 27.
The forecast also predicts lighter to moderate rains in Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and parts of northeastern India, including Assam and Meghalaya, in the coming days.
Authorities are advising caution as the heavy rains may cause disruptions and pose risks, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
