Nagpur. The central government is set to introduce a strong law soon to take strict action against those involved in the manufacture and trade of fake and substandard seeds as well as adulterated pesticides, and to curb their sale. Once this law comes into force, if crops suffer damage due to poor-quality agricultural inputs, the manufacturing companies of those inputs will be held legally liable to pay full compensation.
Addressing the Shetkari Samvad programme at the Krushi Vigyan Kendra in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra, the Union Agriculture Minister said that the proposed seeds and pesticides law will include provisions for penalties as well as criminal action against guilty individuals and companies. Farmers often suffer heavy losses due to substandard seeds and pesticides, making it essential to put a strong check on such practices.
On this occasion, the Agriculture Minister also announced the release of ₹367 crore to Maharashtra as the 21st installment under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana. According to official sources, this will strengthen the agricultural sector in the state.
Indian farmers have long been demanding a ban on the production and marketing of fake or adulterated seeds and substandard pesticides. Such products have become widespread across various states. Being relatively cheaper, small and marginal farmers often purchase them and later suffer serious losses. Fake seeds fail to germinate in fields, while poor-quality pesticides are ineffective in controlling pests and diseases. With the proposed law, a significant curb on these practices is now expected.
