Sugar mills will face problems due to decrease in sugarcane production in Haryana

The decline in sugarcane sowing area in Haryana, particularly the 15% drop for the 2024-25 season, is expected to create significant challenges for the state's sugar mills.
With a reduction of about 56,000 acres in sugarcane cultivation, the state's overall sugar production is likely to decrease due to insufficient raw material supply.
There are a total of 14 sugar mills in Haryana, both cooperative and private, spread across regions such as Panipat, Rohtak, Karnal, and Yamuna Nagar.
These mills rely heavily on a steady supply of sugarcane for processing, and a sharp fall in production could lead to difficulties in maintaining operations.
Several factors have contributed to this decline. First, seasonal variations and insect infestations have affected the yield rate of sugarcane.
In addition, severe rains and floods in areas like Shahabad, Narayangarh, and Yamuna Nagar have damaged crops, further reducing the cultivation area.
Labor shortages have also played a significant role, as many sugarcane farmers depend on seasonal workers from states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
Due to various factors, including the demand for higher wages, fewer laborers are available. Additionally, the growing profitability of crops like paddy and wheat has led many farmers to shift away from sugarcane farming.
The situation is compounded by the reduced use of machinery for harvesting sugarcane, further hindering the efficiency of production.
As a result, sugar mills may struggle to meet their processing needs, leading to a likely shortfall in sugar production, which could have economic repercussions for both farmers and the sugar industry in the region.
