Sugar prices likely to remain firm due to festive demand

New Delhi. The festival of Navratri, dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga, has commenced, and upcoming festivals like Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath—periods that typically witness a rise in sugar demand and consumption—are on the horizon. The government is allocating substantial 'free-sale' sugar quotas for each fortnight to ensure adequate supply and availability, thereby curbing any sharp rise in prices.

The domestic sugar sales quota for the fortnight of October 16–31, 2026, is set to be announced shortly. The government has repeatedly directed millers to sell their entire allocated quota within the stipulated timeframe to maintain sufficient stocks in the domestic market and prevent any artificial price spikes.

However, current indications do not align with the government's expectations. Last week, wholesale sugar prices surged significantly in several cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Indore, Raipur, and Patna. While price fluctuations may occur in the coming days, the overall trend is expected to remain firm. Sugarcane crushing operations are likely to begin at some sugar mills starting next week.
