Sugarcane Crushing Rises by Over 23.7 Million Tonnes

New Delhi. Due to ample availability of cane and increased activity by sugar mills, a strong rise is being witnessed in sugarcane crushing at the national level during the current marketing season. According to the latest data released by the apex body of cooperative sugar mills, the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF), total sugarcane crushing across the country during the quarter from October 1 to December 31, 2025, increased to 1,339.21 lakh tonnes. This is higher by 237.65 lakh tonnes, or 21.55 percent, compared to crushing of 1,101.87 lakh tonnes during the same period last year.
As per the federation’s report, compared to last year, sugarcane crushing during the current marketing season improved in Uttar Pradesh from 366.29 lakh tonnes to 367.53 lakh tonnes, surged sharply in Maharashtra from 347.67 lakh tonnes to 556.57 lakh tonnes, increased in Karnataka from 271.76 lakh tonnes to 279.75 lakh tonnes, and rose in Gujarat from 29.55 lakh tonnes to 31.32 lakh tonnes.
In addition, during the review period, sugarcane crushing was recorded at 2.60 lakh tonnes in Andhra Pradesh, 19.70 lakh tonnes in Bihar, 15.38 lakh tonnes in Haryana, 11.25 lakh tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, 16.67 lakh tonnes in Punjab, 10 lakh tonnes in Tamil Nadu, 8.89 lakh tonnes in Telangana, 14.86 lakh tonnes in Uttarakhand, and 4.71 lakh tonnes in other states. Crushing operations are continuing at full pace across all states.
With a sharp increase in sugarcane crushing and an improvement in the average sugar recovery rate, total sugar production at the national level during the said quarter rose by 22.70 lakh tonnes, or 23.74 percent, from 95.60 lakh tonnes to 118.30 lakh tonnes. Sugar production is expected to register a strong increase this season.
