Summer Moong Procurement Halted by MP Government, Market Prices Crash; Farmers in Distress
★ The Madhya Pradesh government has suspended the procurement of summer moong citing the excessive use of banned agrochemicals like glyphosate and paraquat. This decision has led to a sharp fall in moong prices across various mandis (markets).
★ Moong prices in Delhi, which were around Rs. 8200 per quintal a month ago, have now dropped by Rs. 1300 to Rs. 6900.
★ In Indore, prices have fallen from Rs. 8000 to Rs. 7200.
★ In Nagaur, rates declined from Rs. 7600 to Rs. 7100,
★ while in Pipariya, they slipped from Rs. 6800 to Rs. 6600.
~~~~~~~~
★ Farmers are now forced to sell moong well below the MSP (Rs. 8558/quintal).
★ This has triggered serious concerns among farming communities, questioning why the crop is allowed to be sold in open markets if it contains residues exceeding permissible limits.
Export Activity Picks Up, But No Domestic Relief
★ Due to declining domestic prices, export offers have started to emerge.
★ Moong is now being quoted at around $800 per metric ton from Dubai.
★ Mung export in Last FY was 22,243 and in 2023-24 exports were 21,482 MT.
★ However, despite increased export potential, there is no visible benefit to domestic farmers or consumers.
Impact on Kharif Sowing Likely
★ If this situation persists, experts warn that kharif moong sowing could decline significantly, potentially affecting the future supply of pulses in the domestic market.
