Surprising Trends in Pulses Sowing Data
★ As of July 4, tur (pigeon pea) sowing declined by 200,000 hectares from last year to 16.47 lakh hectares, while urad (black gram) rose by 25,000 hectares to 5.27 lakh hectares, and moong (green gram) jumped by 9.85 lakh hectares to 16.58 lakh hectares.
★ Last year, moong was sown in only 6.73 lakh hectares. It appears that some states have not yet fully reported their moong acreage.
★ In Rajasthan, sowing reached 13.54 lakh hectares by July 4, compared to just 2.46 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
★ Another reason for the increase could be the early arrival of the monsoon this year compared to last year, which likely encouraged faster sowing. However, despite the overall increase, the decline in tur acreage is surprising.
★ There is little doubt that falling prices may have reduced farmers' interest in tur cultivation.
★ The actual and more reliable data will start to emerge 15–20 days later, as the monsoon begins to retreat.
