Hyderabad. Anticipating economic losses faced by producers due to falling wholesale market prices, the Telangana government has planned to procure 8 lakh tonnes of maize in the current Kharif marketing season of 2025-26. To this end, 125 procurement centers have been opened across the state, where the procurement process has begun at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) set by the central government.
It is noteworthy that the MSP for maize has been increased by ₹175 from ₹2,225 per quintal in the 2024-25 season to ₹2,400 per quintal for the 2025-26 season. Government procurement is providing significant relief to farmers.
According to official data, maize was cultivated on only 60,000 hectares in Telangana during the last Kharif season, while during the current year, the area under cultivation has increased by 2 lakh hectares to 2.60 lakh hectares.
Due to the good condition of the crop, maize production in the state is expected to increase rapidly this year, reaching 1.15 million tons, of which 8 lakh tons will be procured by the government.
In Telangana, the maximum limit for maize procurement per acre at the minimum support price was previously set at 18 quintals. However, given the significant increase in average yields, the state government has increased this limit to 25 quintals, which is expected to provide significant relief to farmers.
Following this decision, 25 quintals of maize will now be procured per acre from each farmer in Telangana.
The Telangana Agriculture Minister has appealed to the Central Government for support and cooperation in the maize procurement scheme. He has sent a letter to the Union Agriculture Minister, requesting his intervention in this matter.
Similarly, a request has been made for relaxation in the rules and conditions related to maize quality and moisture content so that farmers do not face difficulties in selling their produce. Some crop damage has been reported in the state due to floods and rains.
