Telangana Sees Sharp Rise in Kharif Crop Area

Hyderabad. Despite less rainfall in the southwest monsoon and low water level in dams and reservoirs in Telangana compared to many important agricultural producing states,

there has been a tremendous increase in the production area of ​​Kharif crops and its area has increased by 27.48 lakh acres from 91.21 lakh acres last year to 118.70 lakh acres till August 20 this year. Under this, there has been a good increase in the area of ​​paddy, coarse grains and cotton etc.

According to the new report of the State Agriculture Department, during the current Kharif season, the total area of ​​paddy and coarse grains in Telangana jumped from 36.16 lakh acres to 61.28 lakh acres as compared to last year.

Under this, the production area of ​​paddy increased from 31.61 lakh acres to 54.80 lakh acres and the area of ​​maize increased from 4.21 lakh acres to 6.13 lakh acres. The sowing area of ​​jowar was 34 thousand acres with a slight increase. Telangana is considered to be a leading producer of paddy and rice.

The production area of ​​pulses crops also improved from 5.12 lakh acres last year to 5.56 lakh acres this time. Under this, especially the sowing area of ​​Arhar (Tuvar) increased from 4.28 lakh acres to 4.73 lakh acres and the area of ​​Urad improved from 19 thousand acres to 22 thousand acres, but the sowing area of ​​moong fell from 63 thousand acres to 60 thousand acres.

But the sowing area of ​​oilseed crops fell from 3.90 lakh acres last year to 3.67 lakh acres this time. Under this, especially the production area of ​​soybean came down from 3.77 lakh acres to 3.60 lakh acres.

Similarly, the area of ​​groundnut and castor is also lagging behind last year, while its sowing has been done in a relatively less area.

Telangana ranks third in cotton production after Gujarat and Maharashtra. In the marketing season of 2024-25, the maximum purchase of cotton at the minimum support price was made from farmers in Telangana by the government agency- Cotton Corporation of India (CCI). This increased the enthusiasm of the farmers.

The cotton production area in Telangana has jumped from 42.07 lakh acres last year to 44.92 lakh acres this time, while the cotton acreage has decreased in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
