Hyderabad: Telangana has set ambitious targets for sowing areas of major Kharif crops like paddy, cotton, maize, and soybean for the upcoming 2025-26 season, with cultivation expected to begin in June.
According to the State Agriculture Department, the cotton sowing area is projected to rise to 20.23 lakh hectares, up from 17.70 lakh hectares last year. Telangana remains the third-largest cotton producer in India after Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The target for paddy cultivation has been set at 27 lakh hectares, an increase of 50,000 hectares from last season. Telangana is a key contributor to rice in the national central pool.
Sowing targets have also been raised for maize (2.50 lakh hectares) and soybean (3.60 lakh hectares), compared to last year’s 2.20 lakh and 1.61 lakh hectares respectively.
To support these targets, the state plans to distribute 16.70 lakh quintals of paddy seeds, 4.80 lakh quintals of maize seeds, 89 lakh packets of cotton seeds, and 1.35 lakh quintals of soybean seeds, ensuring timely and adequate supply to farmers.
