New Delhi. The sowing season of Rabi crops has started and the recommendation of the Agricultural Cost and Price Commission (CACP) of the Ministry of Agriculture has also been received, on the basis of which the minimum support price (MSP) of these crops is to be determined.

It is understood that the MSP may get a green signal in the meeting of the Central Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs soon. In the Rabi season, the minimum support price is mainly determined for wheat, barley, gram, lentils and mustard.

Farmers are expecting a good increase in the MSP of these crops because its market price is high and its cost expenses are also increasing. A farmer organization says that the minimum support price of wheat should be increased from the current level of Rs 2275 per quintal to Rs 3000 per quintal.

Similarly, the support price of gram, mustard and lentils should also increase in accordance with the cost expenses.

The cost should be assessed correctly and 50 percent profit should be ensured to the farmers on it. The support price of mustard is Rs 5650 and the support price of lentil is Rs 6425 per quintal, which should be increased by 10 percent.

The support price of gram was increased by 2 percent from Rs 5335 in 2022-23 to Rs 5440 per quintal in the 2023-24 season, while its wholesale market price is around Rs 7500 per quintal.

It is necessary to encourage farmers to increase production and this incentive can be given through increase in support price.

Due to low production and high market price, the government was forced to allow duty-free import of gram and yellow peas this time.
