The Central Government has amended the Sugar Control Order rules:
★ Now, details of raw sugar and khandsari (traditional unrefined sugar) will also have to be provided. According to the new rules, raw sugar will now be included in the sugar stock.
★ It was stated that many mills were giving incorrect stock information under the pretext of raw sugar.
★ It was often claimed that this raw sugar was being supplied to the khandsari and organic industries.
★ As per the rules, khandsari units with a cane-crushing capacity of 500 tons per day will now be included under this order. This is expected to ease sugarcane payments and reveal the actual sugar production.
★ Currently, there are 373 khandsari units operating in the country, out of which 66 have a capacity exceeding 500 tons per day.
★ Additionally, mills and the government will now be connected through an online portal. This will allow the government to access real-time information on sales conducted through the quota system. The portal will also be integrated with GST for better transparency.
