Karnal. This time the wholesale market price of Basmati rice has come down a lot compared to last year, due to which the farmers of Haryana are very worried and disappointed.
It is known that the date of assembly elections in Haryana has already been announced and if Basmati producers do not get a fair price, then their resentment towards the ruling party may increase. Haryana is the main producer of Basmati rice.
The price of Basmati rice has come down from Rs 3500-4000 per quintal last year to around Rs 2500 per quintal this time.
The minimum export price (MAP) of $ 950 per ton has been fixed for Basmati rice, while the exporters are demanding the government to reduce it further.
This time Basmati rice has been cultivated well in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana because after getting a profitable price for the last crop, the farmers made every effort to increase its area. Monsoon rains were also almost normal in these states.
Irrigation facilities are available in Punjab and Haryana and hence the situation there is said to be better.
It is noteworthy that no minimum support price is fixed by the Central Government for Basmati rice.
Nor is it purchased from farmers, hence its price mainly depends on the demand of millers, traders and exporters.
