The Canadian lentil market has remained stable with limited fluctuations in price during December 2024. The FOB farm price for red lentils is holding steady at 33-34 cents per pound, while advance contracts for the new crop have not yet gained significant momentum.

There has been little discussion on sowing area and production for the upcoming season, which will start in April-June 2025, with new stock arriving from August 2025.

Green lentil prices show some signs of weakening demand, but price stability persists. Small green lentils of number 1 grade are priced around 53-54 cents per pound, while number 2 grade thick green lentils are priced at 58-60 cents per pound. In the U.S., medium grade green lentils are priced around 40 cents per pound.

Some advance contracts for the 2025 crop of green lentils have begun, and more are expected as the season progresses. Early indications suggest that the sowing area for green lentils in Canada may increase slightly, as the price remains attractive to farmers, although sowing is still months away.

Canadian red lentil producers and exporters are closely monitoring Australia's lentil production, where adverse weather has led to a significant drop in yields.

This could potentially reduce overall global production, affecting market conditions. In contrast, India is reportedly seeing a good lentil sowing season, which could influence global supply dynamics.
