Tremendous increase in gram sowing
There has been a tremendous increase in gram sowing this year, as reported by government data:
Gram sowing surged dramatically from 5.74 lakh hectares last year to over 86 lakh hectares. This significant increase is largely attributed to the high prices of gram among pulses, making it an attractive crop for farmers.
Lentil sowing also saw a modest increase, rising to 14.75 lakh hectares, up slightly from last year.
However, sowing of other pulses saw a decline:
Pea sowing decreased by 5 thousand hectares, reaching just over 8 lakh hectares.
Black gram sowing fell by 50 thousand hectares, down to 2.91 lakh hectares.
Green gram sowing dropped by 36 thousand hectares, halving its area to 0.36 lakh hectares.
This shift in sowing patterns reflects the strong economic incentives provided by high gram prices, while other pulses have faced reduced interest from farmers this year.
