Uncertainty over imports from India affects Canadian yellow pea market

The Canadian yellow pea market is facing some uncertainties due to the potential end of India's duty-free import policy.

As the price of yellow peas has softened slightly, falling from $10.50-11.00 per bushel to $10.50 per bushel, the market remains relatively stable overall.

Green peas have maintained their price at $16.50-17.00 per bushel, and the price of maple peas has dropped from $23-24 per bushel to $20-21 per bushel.

India, a significant importer of Canadian yellow peas, has allowed duty-free imports until December 31, 2024. With this deadline approaching, there is growing concern that the policy may not be extended, potentially disrupting Canada's yellow pea exports to India.

This would create significant challenges for Canadian producers and exporters, given the large stockpile of peas available for export.

Additionally, China, another key market, has shifted its preference to importing peas from Russia rather than Canada, further complicating the outlook for Canadian pea exports.

This shift, combined with the potential loss of the Indian market, may exacerbate the difficulties faced by Canada's pea industry.
