Unseasonal rains have caused significant damage to crops in Nashik district, Maharashtra, particularly in the talukas of Sinnar, Niphad, Yeola, and Baglan. The torrential rains, attributed to Cyclone Fengal, occurred last week and have led to the destruction of maize, grapes, onions, and other crops.
In Sinnar, 23.3 mm of rain was recorded in a single day, while other areas like Yeola, Nashik city, and Niphad experienced substantial rainfall as well.
The rains have primarily affected the late Kharif onion crop in Niphad taluka, the early maize crop in Niphad, and the grape crop in Baglan.
Additionally, the rains have harmed young Rabi season onion plants in the nursery. Initial estimates suggest that around 318 hectares of crops have been impacted, with significant damage expected to the early grape crop in Baglan, which is used for making raisins.
The district administration has ordered a panchanama (survey) to assess the full extent of the damage. Nashik, known for its onion and grape production, faces economic losses due to these unseasonal weather conditions.
