Unseasonal Rain Disrupts Crop Harvesting in Saskatchewan

Saskatoon. While the harvesting of various crops is underway in Saskatchewan—Canada's leading agricultural province—unseasonal rains and water accumulation in fields across the eastern and western regions are hindering progress and affecting crop quality.

By September 21, 2026, harvesting had been completed on only 41 percent of the crop area in Saskatchewan, falling significantly short of the five-year average of 82 percent and the 10-year average of 73 percent. Harvesting completion rates stand at 67 percent in the southwest, 45 percent in the west-central region, 38 percent in the southeast, 29 percent in the east-central area, 26 percent in the northwest, and 24 percent in the northeast.

At the provincial level, harvesting has been completed for 63 percent of the mustard crop, 26 percent of canola, 10 percent of soybeans, and 7 percent of flaxseed. Among pulse crops, 92 percent of lentils, 91 percent of peas, and 32 percent of chickpeas (including Kabuli varieties) have been harvested. Regarding major cereal crops, harvesting has been completed on 61 percent of the barley area, 55 percent of durum wheat, 33 percent of oats, and 32 percent of spring wheat. Rainy weather conditions persist across various parts of the province.
