Vietnam Leads in Cashew Exports, India Falls Behind
★ In the past 15 years, India’s cashew exports have increased by 50%. In 2011-12, a record 130,000 tonnes of cashews were exported.
★ In 2023-24, export revenue fell to a 7-year low. In 2022-23, exports were less than 60,000 tonnes.
★ In the current season, exports may shrink further to around 45,000 tonnes.
★ Domestic consumption of cashews in India is over 350,000 tonnes, while the processing capacity is 2 million tonnes.
★ The consumption of processed cashews in India is between 700,000 to 750,000 tonnes. Processing of 3 million tonnes of raw cashews yields just over 400,000 tonnes of processed cashews. India is the largest consumer of cashews in the world.
★ In 2023-24, raw cashew production in India was 795,000 tonnes. The country remains heavily dependent on imports.
★ The higher price of processed Indian cashews compared to Vietnamese cashews is affecting exports.
★ In the current year, Vietnam imported 1.04 million tonnes of raw cashews — 10% more than the previous year.
