Coriander prices fall: No possibility of rise now
New Delhi. Coriander prices fell during the current week. Looking at the current situation, there is no possibility of rise in the near future, but sources believe that the falling prices of coriander should stop now because the prices have fallen considerably. Apart from this, the arrival of coriander in the markets will also start decreasing in the coming days. Because the pressure of arrival of new goods has started reducing. During the current week, prices remained sluggish in the spot as well as futures market. In futures, the price of May opened at Rs 7622 and closed at Rs 7424 at the end of the week, while the price of June opened at Rs 7704, which closed at Rs 7500 at the end of the week.
Despite low sowing during the current season, there is news of satisfactory production. Because after sowing, the weather remained favorable for the crop due to which the productivity per hectare increased. It is noteworthy that for the current season, the area of coriander sowing in the major producing states Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan was 3.37 lakh hectares, whereas last year sowing was done on 364 lakh hectares. Due to less sowing, there are estimates of a decline in production. Sources say that during the current season, the production of coriander in the country will be more than 1 crore bags. Whereas last year the production was 1.10 crore bags and in the year 2023 the production was 1.50/1.60 crore bags.
Arrival till now
According to the traders of the producing centers, the arrival of coriander in the major producing state Gujarat has been 30/32 lakh bags so far, while the total production is estimated to be 40/42 lakh bags. There are reports of total arrival of 20/22 lakh bags in the mandis of Madhya Pradesh, while the total production is believed to be 45/48 lakh bags. The total arrival of coriander in Rajasthan's mandis is expected to be 9/10 lakh bags till now whereas coriander production in Rajasthan is estimated to be 14/15 lakh bags this year.
Slow to high
Due to the slow news of futures and weak demand in spot market, the prices of coriander have fallen by Rs. 150/200 per quintal during the current week and the price of coriander eagle in mandis has come down to Rs. 6700/7000 and that of badaami to Rs. 6300/6700 per quintal. But sources say that now the falling prices of coriander should stop but there is no possibility of rise in prices in the near future. Sources believe that for the next fortnight the market will continue to move with a slow to high of Rs. 100/200. Improvement in prices is possible after May 15. Because the arrival in mandis will start decreasing. Although the arrivals in the markets of Gujarat and Rajasthan are decreasing, there are indications of good arrivals in the markets of Madhya Pradesh. Traders say that during the current season, along with the production being low, there are reports of the stock also being less than last year. Last year, at the time of arrival of new goods, the stock of coriander at the centers was estimated to be 65/70 lakh bags, which is being estimated to be 35/40 lakh bags this year. The total availability of coriander for the current season, including the outstanding stock and new production, will be around 1.40 crore bags. Whereas 1.50/1.60 crore bags are required including local demand and export. Therefore, the prices of coriander are likely to remain high in the coming days.
Export low
In the first nine months of the current financial year 2024-25, coriander exports have declined by about 50 percent. According to the data released by the Spices Board, during April-December 2024, the export of coriander was 43609 tonnes and the income from export was Rs 45870 crore. Whereas during April-December 2023, the export was 87531 tonnes and the income from export was Rs 75089 lakh. Due to the decline in export, there was also a 39 percent reduction in income.
