Coriander likely to rise

New Delhi. Knowledgeable sources say that there is no possibility of a slowdown in the current prices of coriander. Because the arrival in the markets has remained limited. Also, it is being estimated that the purchases of spice manufacturers and exporters will increase soon. During the current week, the prices of coriander remained in a limited range in the futures and spot markets. However, at the end of the week, the prices of coriander closed strongly in the futures.
Sources believe that most of the total production has arrived in the markets. Currently, farmers have 10/20 percent stock left, which will come to the markets when the prices increase. During the current season, the production of coriander in the major producing states, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan was satisfactory. Due to the weather being favorable for the crop, the quality has also come good. Sources say that this year the price of Badami quality has come down while the arrival of Eagle quality was good. Trade estimates are that during the current season, the production of coriander in the country will be around one crore. Whereas last year the production was 1.10 crore bags and in the year 2023 the production was around 1.50 crore bags.
Arrival
At present, the arrival of coriander in Gondal Mandi of Gujarat, the major producer state, is 17/20 thousand bags, but due to weak demand, trade of 17/20 thousand bags takes place for two days. During the current season, there is news of coriander production in Gujarat being 40/42 lakh bags. Arrival in other mandis has remained very low except Guna Mandi of Madhya Pradesh. Daily arrival in Guna Mandi is 10/12 thousand bags whereas in Kumbhraj it is 3000/3500 bags. Arrival in Neemuch has remained 700/800 bags. In Kota market of Rajasthan, the arrival is 1000/1500 bags and in Baran, the arrival is 1000/1200 bags whereas in Ramganj, the arrival is 3500/4000 bags. This year, coriander production in Madhya Pradesh is estimated to be 45/48 bags whereas in Rajasthan, the production is expected to be 14/15 lakhs.
Slow-fast
Sources say that there is no possibility of slowdown in the current prices. Because till now the prices were slow due to the pressure of arrival and weak demand in the spot market, but now, apart from the decrease in arrival, local demand is also expected to increase. Due to which, it is being expected that during the months of June-July, trade estimates are being made that the prices of coriander will increase by 8/10 rupees per kg. Currently, the price of coriander Badami is being quoted at Rs 6000/6400 and Eagle at Rs 6800/7000 per quintal. While the price of scooter quality is running at Rs 7500/8000.
Low availability
There are reports of less availability of coriander as compared to consumption during the current season. According to an estimate, apart from the production of about 1 crore bags of coriander during the current season, the outstanding stock is believed to be 35/40 lakh bags, while the requirement of coriander including export and local consumption is around 1.50/1.60 crore bags. Sources believe that due to the decrease in production in the country for the second year also, the stock of coriander will remain nominal in the coming season.
Decline in exports
A sharp decline has been registered in coriander exports during the current financial year 2024-25. According to the data released by the Spices Board, the total export of coriander during April-March (2024-25) was 60324 tonnes. Whereas in April-March (2023-24) the export was 108624 tonnes. The income received from coriander exports during the current season was Rs 63320 lakh while the income received in the last season was Rs 94827 lakh. Quantitatively, coriander exports during the current season were down by 44 percent while a decline of 33 percent has been recorded in terms of income.
