Cumin prices rise : No possibility of much decline
New Delhi. Cumin prices rose during the current week. Spot and futures markets rose due to weak arrivals at production centers and increased buying by exporters. In the futures market, cumin for the month of July opened at Rs 18850 and closed at Rs 20095 at the end of the week. Whereas cumin for the month of August opened at Rs 19070. And closed at Rs 20215 at the end of the week. The export price was also quoted at Rs 4100 per 20 kg at the end of the week, which was being quoted at Rs 3900 a week ago.
Low arrivals
Due to continuously falling prices and most of the total production coming to the markets, the daily arrivals in the markets have decreased. The arrival in the main Mandi Unjha has reduced to 7/8 thousand bags whereas the arrival in Rajkot and Gondal has reduced to 500/600 bags. Currently, the daily arrival of cumin in all the mandis of Gujarat has reduced to 12/13 thousand bags.
Arrival in the mandis of Rajasthan is also decreasing. The arrival in the main mandi Merta and Nagaur is going on at 1200/1500 bags whereas the arrival in Jodhpur and Nokha mandi has reduced to 700/800 bags.
Arrival till now
Informed sources say that in the current season, the total arrival of cumin in the mandis of Gujarat has been 37/38 lakh bags till now. It is worth mentioning that this year the production of cumin in Gujarat is estimated to be 42/45 lakh bags. The total arrival in the mandis of Rajasthan till now is estimated to be 25/26 lakh bags. This year, the cumin production in Rajasthan is being estimated to be 48/50 lakh bags. According to an estimate, due to reduction in the area of sowing at production centers for the current season, there is news of cumin production in the country being 90/92 lakh bags this year, whereas last year the production was 1.10 crore bags.
Production abroad
Apart from India, cumin is also produced in China, Turkey, Syria and Afghanistan. Sources say that although earlier the estimates of cumin production in China were being made to be about 1 lakh. But due to adverse weather, currently the production estimates are being made to be 70/80 thousand tons. Apart from this, the production in Syria is likely to be 9/10 thousand tons and in Turkey 10/11 thousand tons. Production in Afghanistan is also being considered to be 10/12 thousand.
Slow-fast
Experts believe that during the last one week, prices have risen by Rs 900/1000 per quintal, now the market price can increase by Rs 400/500 more. After that, profit booking and selling may come in the market and prices may fall for a short time, but there is a possibility of a good rise in prices during the month of August. It is being estimated. In the month of August-September, the export price of cumin should become Rs 4500 per 20 kg. Whereas currently the price is running at Rs 4100.
High export
Due to high production in the country last season, the prices of cumin remained sluggish, due to which a spectacular increase of 39 percent was registered in cumin exports. According to the data released by the Spices Board, during the year 2024-25 (April-March), cumin exports stood at 229881.67 tonnes and the income received from exports was Rs 6178.86 crore. Whereas in the year 2023-24 the export was 165269.45 tonnes and the income obtained from export was Rs 5797.23 crores.
