Groundnut prices firm in Gujarat and Rajasthan - weak in Uttar Pradesh
New Delhi. Strong demand from crushers, processors, and exporters, coupled with significant procurement by government agencies at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), led to a sharp increase in groundnut prices in the markets of the two top producing states, Gujarat and Rajasthan, during the week of January 3-9.
Gujarat
In Rajkot, Gujarat, groundnut prices surged by ₹2000 to reach a high of ₹8000/11000 per quintal, while in Gondal, prices remained stable at ₹6000/6900 per quintal. Daily arrivals in Rajkot were 15-20 thousand bags, and in Gondal, 35,000 bags arrived on January 7th.
Rajasthan
During the week under review, groundnut prices improved by ₹200 in Bikaner, Rajasthan, reaching ₹6000 per quintal, and increased by ₹300 in Solapur, Maharashtra, reaching ₹8700 per quintal. Trading activity was also good in these markets.
Uttar Pradesh
However, markets in Uttar Pradesh remained weak. Groundnut prices fell by ₹200 in Jhansi and Mahoba, settling at ₹5800/6300 per quintal and ₹5800/6500 per quintal respectively, while in Mauranipur, prices dropped by ₹500 to ₹5500/6200 per quintal. Groundnut arrivals increased in Uttar Pradesh markets.
Major Buyers
Although Indonesia has lifted the temporary ban on imports of Indian groundnuts, it has implemented some stricter import regulations. As a result, Indian exporters are currently not showing much interest in shipping groundnuts to Indonesia. It is worth noting that Indonesia has traditionally been the largest buyer of Indian groundnuts. Peanut imports are likely to pick up sooner or later.
Peanut Kernels
Trading in shelled peanuts remained weak, causing prices to fall by Rs. 400-700 per quintal in Solapur, Maharashtra, and by Rs. 500-600 per quintal in Nagpur.
Peanut Oil
The price of loose peanut oil remained stable in Gujarat, while other centers saw fluctuations of Rs. 2-4 per kg.
Branded Oil
There was no change in the price of branded peanut oil in Kota, while filtered peanut oil prices in Jaipur and Niwai saw limited fluctuations. The price of de-oiled cake (DOC) was observed to be quite strong.
