Lentil prices stable due to limited demand
Weekly Review: Lentil Market
Mumbai: Lentil prices remained stable due to limited demand and balanced supply. Availability of lentils in ports and markets kept the demand and supply in equilibrium, resulting in no major fluctuations in prices. As of December 9, lentil sowing was recorded at 14.75 lakh hectares, slightly higher than last year's 14.5 lakh hectares. However, lentil production estimates were revised down by ABARES from 17 lakh tonnes to 11 lakh tonnes. Exports saw a sharp decline in October 2024, with only 14.11 lakh tonnes exported compared to 18 lakh tonnes during the same period last year. Prices remained stable at:
- Mundra: ₹5850
- Hazira: ₹5900/5925
- Container (Canada): ₹6050
- Australia: ₹6100/6150 per quintal
Kolkata: Lentil prices in Kolkata remained unchanged, with stable market conditions despite sluggish demand:
- Canada: ₹6300
- Australia: ₹6350 per quintal
Delhi: Due to weak demand from lentil millers, there were minor fluctuations of ₹25-50 per quintal, but prices remained relatively stable:
- Choti Kota: ₹6475
- Bundi: ₹6850
- Uttar Pradesh: ₹6900
- Desi Badi: ₹6600/25 per quintal
Madhya Pradesh: The prices in Madhya Pradesh showed no change, driven by steady demand:
- Ashoknagar: ₹5700/5850
- Sagar: ₹5600/6000
- Damoh: ₹5700/6200
- Indore: ₹6000
- Katni: ₹6600 per quintal
Uttar Pradesh: Weak demand led to a ₹50 per quintal decline in prices, with the following rates at the end of the week:
- Bareilly (small): ₹7000
- Thick: ₹6600/25
- Kanpur: ₹6475
- Lalitpur (thick): ₹5800/6200, (small): ₹6150/6200 per quintal
Bihar & Raipur: In Bihar, lentil prices saw a ₹50 decline, reflecting sluggish demand:
- Barh: ₹6600
- Khusrupur: ₹6550
- Raipur: Stable at ₹6200 per quintal
Masoor Dal: Despite a fall in lentil prices and weak demand, masoor dal prices held steady:
- Indore: ₹7550
- Barh: ₹7700/8000
- Khusrupur: ₹7700/8000 per quintal
Overall, the lentil market displayed stable pricing across regions with minimal fluctuation, reflecting weak demand and adequate supply.
