Lentil prices remain mixed as demand remains limited
Mumbai. Demand in the lentil market remained limited during the current week, resulting in a mixed trend of ups and downs in prices. Lentil prices remained stable or fluctuated slightly amid slow buying by buyers and steady supply. Lentil production in Canada has been excellent this year, and harvesting has been completed and stocks have reached farmers. Despite this, lentil prices have remained stable or softened due to weak export demand. Large green lentils are selling for 27-28 cents, red lentils for 23.50 cents, and small lentils for 21-22 cents per pound. Beluga lentils are available for 40 cents per pound, but neither variety is seeing strong demand. India and other Asian importers are currently turning to Australia, where lentil production is expected to be around a record 1.7 million tons. Harvesting of the new crop has already begun, and pressure on offer prices is increasing, making competition for Canada tough. Lentil production in Russia has also been good. Due to all these reasons, Canadian producers are slowing down the sale of stocks. It is estimated that there will be no shortage of lentil supply in 2025-26.
Due to sluggish buying and selling, imported lentil prices remained unchanged during the current week, and at the weekend, prices remained stable at Rs. 5850 per quintal in Mundra, Rs. 5900/5925 in Hazira, Rs. 6050 per quintal in Container Canada and Rs. 6100 per quintal in Australia.
