Lentil buying weak due to sluggish demand

Mumbai. Buying of lentils has remained very cold due to sluggish demand, due to which there was a downward trend in the prices of lentils during the last week. Availability of lentils increased in the country due to good domestic crop and increasing imports. 2.82 lakh tonnes of lentils were imported from April to July, which was 4.6 lakh tonnes during the same period last year. Decline in imports was seen due to increasing availability. Imports decreased in all the months from April to July as compared to 2023. 64,583 tonnes in April 2024, 6,647 tonnes in April 2023, 49,095 tonnes in May 2024, 61,999 tonnes in May 2023, 1.02 lakh tonnes in June 2024 and 1.7 lakh tonnes in June 2023. In July 2023, 1.68 lakh tonne lentil was imported which may decrease to 0.66 lakh tonne in July 2024. Availability is good due to increasing imports and good domestic crop. Which had a direct impact on the prices. Due to continued selling by importers and sluggish buying, Mumbai lentil witnessed a decline of Rs 75/100 per quintal last week and with this decline, the price remained at Rs 5650 for Mundra, Rs 5700 for Hazira and Rs 5900/6000 per quintal at the weekend. Similarly, Kolkata lentil prices also witnessed a decline of Rs 25 per quintal last week and the price remained at Rs 5975/6025 per quintal at the weekend.

Delhi

Due to sluggish demand from dal millers, Delhi lentil prices witnessed a fall of Rs. 25/50 per quintal last week and with this fall, the weekend prices remained at Choti Kota Rs. 6525, Bundi Rs. 6950, Uttar Pradesh Rs. 7000 and Desi Badi Rs. 6450 per quintal.

Madhya Pradesh

Due to increased selling and weak buying, Madhya Pradesh lentil prices witnessed a fall of Rs. 50/100 per quintal during the last week and the weekend prices remained at Ashoknagar Rs. 5800/5900, Ganjbasoda Rs. 5700/6000, Sagar Rs. 5600/6000, Damoh Rs. 5700/6225, Indore Rs. 5900/5950 and Katni Rs. 6450 per quintal.

Uttar Pradesh

Due to sluggish buying and selling, during the last week, Uttar Pradesh lentil prices fluctuated by 25/50 rupees per quintal and the prices remained at Bareilly small 7150 rupees, thick 6650 rupees, Kanpur 6550 rupees and Lalitpur thick 5800/50 rupees, small 6200/6250 rupees per quintal.

Others

Due to sluggish demand, no rise or fall was observed in Bihar lentil prices during the last week and the prices remained stable at Barh 6700 rupees, Khusrupur 6600 rupees and Mokama 6700 rupees per quintal during the weekend. While in Raipur lentil, a decline of about 200 rupees per quintal was observed last week and the prices remained at 6100 rupees per quintal at the weekend.

Masoor Dal

Due to the fall in price of Masoor and sluggish demand, prices of Masoor Dal witnessed a fall of Rs. 50/100 per quintal last week and the prices remained at Rs. 7400 for Jalgaon, Rs. 7500/50 for Indore, Rs. 7700/8000 for Barh and Rs. 7600/7900 per quintal for Khusrupur at the weekend.
