Limited fluctuations in paddy and rice prices amidst normal trading activity
New Delhi. Paddy arrivals in domestic markets were normal, and millers and processors were making some purchases. As a result, prices saw limited fluctuations during the week of January 3-9.
Delhi
In Delhi's Narela market, daily paddy arrivals were generally between 8,000 and 12,000 bags, although on January 8th, arrivals surged to 30,000 bags. The Najafgarh market saw an average daily arrival of 3,000 bags of paddy. Paddy prices were slightly higher in the Narela market and slightly lower in the Najafgarh market. Kharif paddy is still being supplied in many states. Basmati paddy is being purchased by the industry and trade sector, while non-Basmati or general category paddy is being purchased by government agencies.
Basmati Paddy
In most markets, the price of Basmati and 'A' grade paddy remained stable or saw only minor fluctuations. Concerns about the impact on Basmati rice export shipments to Iran and the US are partially putting pressure on Basmati paddy prices. Paddy arrivals in Punjab and Haryana markets are negligible, and government procurement there has already ended.
Uttar Pradesh
However, a good supply of Basmati paddy continues in Etah, Mainpuri, Shahjahanpur, Jahangirabad, Aligarh, and Khair in Uttar Pradesh. Paddy prices fluctuated, showing increases in some areas and decreases in others, depending on demand and supply.
Rajasthan
In Rajasthan's Kota and Bundi markets, there were strong paddy arrivals, but due to a lack of corresponding demand, prices fell by up to Rs. 250 per quintal.
Rice
As far as rice is concerned, trading activity was somewhat weak during the week of January 3-9. Although the significant depreciation of the rupee against the dollar has kept Indian rice largely competitive in the international market, foreign importers are not showing any urgency in purchasing it due to an oversupply. Indian rice export performance is also only average. A sufficient stock of rice is available in the domestic market, contributing to price stability.
