Paddy Arrivals Cease in Most Markets; Rice Prices Witness Fluctuations
New Delhi: In most of the country's major markets—including Narela, Najafgarh, Karnal, Amritsar, and Aligarh—arrivals of Basmati and 'A' Grade paddy have either ceased entirely or become negligible. Only markets such as Bhatapara and Rajim in Chhattisgarh, Bundi and Kota in Rajasthan, and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh are currently witnessing some limited arrivals of paddy. While the Narela market in Delhi previously received daily arrivals of paddy, consignments now arrive only sporadically.
Arrivals
During the week of May 23–29, the Kota market recorded an average daily arrival of 750–800 bags of paddy, while the Bundi market saw arrivals of 1,500–2,000 bags. Driven by robust trading activity, prices in these markets registered an increase of ₹100–₹200 per quintal. Similarly, the Shahjahanpur market in Uttar Pradesh received daily arrivals of 1,000–2,000 bags; modest buying interest from millers and exporters led to a price hike of ₹70–₹100 per quintal. In contrast, Bhatapara witnessed a daily supply of 6,000–10,000 bags of paddy, while Rajim received 10,000–12,000 bags daily.
Bhatapara
In Bhatapara, the price of 'Mahamaya' paddy declined by ₹200 to settle at ₹2,400–₹2,500 per quintal. Meanwhile, in the Rajim market, the price of 'BPT' paddy dropped by ₹70 to stand at ₹2,130 per quintal. The Narela market remained quiet and stable.
Rice
As far as rice is concerned, exports of Basmati rice from India to countries in West Asia, the Middle East, and the Gulf region continue to be impacted by renewed tensions between Iran and the U.S., as well as the near-halt of shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the status of shipments to other countries remains largely normal. Consequently, demand from exporters for rice procurement remains steady.
Punjab (Amritsar)
During the week under review, the price of HMT rice in Bhatapara improved by ₹100 to reach ₹5,500–₹5,600 per quintal, while the price of 1509 Sella rice in Amritsar (Punjab) rose by ₹100 to stand at ₹7,750–₹7,800 per quintal. Prices for several other varieties and grades of rice in the region also firmed up by ₹100–₹200 per quintal.
Uttarakhand
However, in the Nagar mandi of Uttarakhand, a decline of ₹250–₹350 per quintal was recorded in the prices of almost all major rice varieties.
Delhi
Rice prices remained firm in Bundi, and a rise of ₹100–₹200 was also observed in the prices at Delhi's Naya Bazar. It is noteworthy that the export performance of general-grade—or non-Basmati—rice continues to be robust, with no significant issues reported regarding its shipments.
