Pea prices continue to decline due to sluggish demand

Kanpur. Pea prices continued their downward trend during the current week. The steady availability of stocks and the resulting demand outstripping the supply of imported goods are not supporting prices, resulting in continued pressure on prices. If the availability of peas remains consistent, further softening in pea prices is expected in the near future. Canada is expected to have a record pea production in the current 2025-26 season, with a stock of 5.44 lakh tonnes left over from the previous season. It is estimated that this year, 3 million tonnes of yellow peas, 5.5 lakh tonnes of green peas, and 2 lakh tonnes of other varieties will be produced, bringing the total availability to over 4 million tonnes. However, the potential for increased exports is limited. Factors such as the 100% import duty imposed by China and potential customs duties by India could pose challenges for Canada. If these obstacles are not removed, the country could experience a significant surplus stock by the end of the season. Under current circumstances, Canadian pea exports are expected to be limited to approximately 2.2 million tons. The surge in production is due to improved weather in regions like Saskatchewan and Alberta and record yield rates of 40-60 bushels/acre, which have also put pressure on local prices.
Due to continued selling pressure from importers and sluggish demand, imported pea prices declined by ₹50/₹75 per quintal during the current week, reaching ₹3400/₹3425 per quintal in Mumbai, ₹3175 per quintal in Russia, ₹3150/₹3200 per quintal in Mudra, and ₹3000/₹3025 per quintal in Kolkata.
