Sugar prices soften amid limited trading

New Delhi. Despite the scorching heat continuing in most parts of the country, there is no strong demand for sugar in the ice cream and cold drinks manufacturing industry. Although the quota of 23 lakh tonnes of sugar set by the government for domestic sale for the month of June is not huge and it should not have put much pressure on the market, but due to the business being somewhat sluggish, a slight decline was recorded in the mill delivery price and spot market price of sugar during the week of 7-13 June.
Mill Delivery Price
During the week under review, the mill delivery price of sugar remained strong by Rs 20 per quintal in eastern Uttar Pradesh, but decreased by Rs 10 in western Uttar Pradesh, Rs 61 in Punjab, Rs 20 in Madhya Pradesh, Rs 5 in Bihar and Rs 10-30 per quintal in Gujarat.
Spot Price
The spot market price of sugar fell from Rs 4240/4340 per quintal to Rs 4215/4300 per quintal in Delhi, by Rs 40 to Rs 4080/4180 per quintal in Indore and by Rs 30 to Rs 3870/4070 per quintal in Mumbai (Vashi). On the other hand, its price remained at the previous level of Rs 4110/4200 per quintal in Raipur and Rs 4250/4350 per quintal in Kolkata. The Nakaport delivery price of sugar softened by Rs 30 to Rs 3820/4020 per quintal. A slight increase was recorded in the tender price of sugar in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Sugarcane Crushing
The crushing campaign of sugarcane for the marketing season 2024-25 has ended and now special sessions are going to be organized in South Karnataka and Tamil Nadu from next month.
Production
Despite a sharp decline in sugar production, its supply and availability situation remains comfortable and prices are also remaining fairly stable.
Stock
The industry may see a reduction in the sugar surplus stock to around 50 lakh tonnes at the end of the current marketing season. There is still some uncertainty over the next season's production. Sugar exports are slow while global market prices have fallen significantly. The pace of production in Brazil is slowly picking up.
