Turmeric sowing more than last year: spot trade less

New Delhi. Turmeric has been sown on a larger area during the current season in the producing states. After sowing, the weather has remained favorable for the crop till now. If the weather remains favorable for the crop in the coming days as well, then certainly the upcoming crop will be more than last year. The new crop will start in January-February. Turmeric is mainly produced in Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Sowing Estimate
Turmeric sowing has been completed in all the producing states. According to the information received, turmeric has been sown on 30/35 percent more area on Maharashtra and Nizamabad line as compared to last year, whereas in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, news of sowing area being 20/25 percent is coming.
Incoming
Except Marathwada line of Maharashtra, arrival in other mandis has remained low. Due to low arrival, turmeric auction in Sangli Mandi has been made three days a week. According to the information received, arrival in Basmat and Hingoli Mandi is 4/5 thousand bags, while in Nanded, arrival is 2/2500 bags daily. Arrival in Nizamabad is 5/7 bags and in Erode 1000/1500 bags. Arrival in Duggirala is going on at 400/500 bags.
Stock
Traders say that the stock of turmeric on Marathwada line (Hingoli, Basmat, Nanded) is considered good, while in other areas the stock is less, due to which the arrival is also limited. Traders believe that at present the stock of turmeric at production centers and consumption centers is likely to be 36/38 lakh bags. According to an estimate, apart from 12/13 lakh bags of stock in Marathwada, Nizamabad is believed to have 4/5 lakh bags of stock whereas Erode is estimated to have 3/4 lakh bags of stock and Sangli is estimated to have 3/4 lakh bags of stock. Apart from 3/4 lakh stock in Duggirala and Warangal, trade estimates are being made that there is 7/8 lakh bags of stock at consumption centres.
Price
Currently, due to low export and local trade, the prices of turmeric are subdued. Sources say that during the current month, the prices of turmeric will keep fluctuating between 2/3 rupees of low and high, but in the months of September-October, apart from the increase in export demand, local trade is also likely to increase. Due to which the prices are likely to increase in the coming days. Sources say that the stock is considered to be low as compared to consumption till the arrival of new crop. The arrival of the new crop will start in January on the Nizamabad line, while the arrival in Erode will start in February and in the markets of Maharashtra in March-April. Currently, the price of turmeric single polished bundle in Delhi market is Rs 130/132.
Export
During the first two months of the current season 2025-26, turmeric exports have registered an increase of 8 percent in quantitative terms. While the income increased by only 2 percent. According to the data released by the Spices Board, turmeric exports in April-May 2025 were 34162.28 tonnes. And the income received from export was Rs 505.38 crore. Whereas in April-May - 2024, the export was 31524.59 and the income received from export was Rs 496.67 crore.
During the year 2024-25 (April-March), the export of turmeric was 176325.34 tonnes and the income received from export was Rs 2885.39 crore. Whereas in the year 2023, the export was 162018.46 tonnes and the income received was Rs 1875.86 crore.
