Weekly Review - Wheat
Wheat prices soften due to weak demand from millers
New Delhi. Due to normal arrivals in important mandis of major producing states and limited purchases by flour millers-processors, the price of wheat fell by up to Rs 100 per quintal during the week of 9-15 August. However, in many mandis, the price remained stable at the previous level.
Delhi
During the week under review, the price of wheat remained stable at Rs 2850/2860 per quintal in Delhi, Rs 2500/3000 per quintal in Rajkot and Rs 2500/3200 per quintal in Indore, but fell by Rs 100 to Rs 2650/3100 per quintal in Dewas.
Madhya Pradesh
The price of wheat softened by Rs 25-25 in Dabra and Itarsi of Madhya Pradesh and Rs 75 per quintal in Ujjain. The average daily arrival of wheat was recorded at 6-10 thousand sacks in Delhi.
Rajasthan
Wheat prices remained at the previous level with limited trading in Kota, Baran and Bundi of Rajasthan, but in some mandis of Uttar Pradesh, it saw an improvement of 15-20 rupees per quintal. At some places, there was a softening of 5-10 rupees.
Maharashtra
Wheat prices in Jalna mandi of Maharashtra increased by 100 rupees to reach 2650/2900 rupees per quintal.
Stock
There is a good stock of wheat in the central pool, but the government does not want to show any hurry in starting its auction sale under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS). It feels that there is a good inflow of wheat in the mandis and the price is also under control to a large extent. Here, the stock of wheat with flour millers-processors is continuously decreasing.
Consumption
It seems that the government may intervene in the market if there is a shortage of wheat during the peak festive months (October-November) and therefore some decision in this regard may be taken in September.
After that there is a lean or off season for wheat supply. There is a shortage of wheat till March. The government may try to maintain the supply and availability of wheat smoothly from September to March.
