New Delhi: Indian farmers have shown tremendous enthusiasm for wheat cultivation this year, leading to a 2.5% increase in the wheat sowing area, which has surpassed 312 lakh hectares. This marks a significant rise compared to 304.77 lakh hectares sown last year.
Agricultural experts note that while the ideal time for sowing wheat in the northwestern states of India is typically before November 20, sowing has continued beyond this period this year.
This extended sowing time could potentially impact the average yield of wheat crops.
To encourage wheat cultivation, the government has raised the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat by Rs 150, from Rs 2275 per quintal last year to Rs 2425 per quintal this year.
Additionally, farmers in states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will receive an extra bonus of Rs 125 per quintal.
Despite the government-set MSP, the open market price of wheat remains higher, further motivating farmers to plant more wheat.
While sowing continues in some areas, the overall wheat area is expected to grow further. However, for optimal production, favorable weather conditions will be crucial.
