Wheat Market Update: Weak Demand, Low Bran Prices Pressure Milling Industry
★ As of August 18, wheat prices showed a mixed trend across major markets. In Delhi Raj, wheat fell by ₹15 to ₹2,835 per quintal. Shahjahanpur saw the biggest drop of ₹40, with prices slipping to ₹2,580. Kota mill-quality wheat declined by ₹5 to ₹2,615, while Indore mill-quality wheat remained steady at ₹2,700.
★ Compared to July, Delhi, Shahjahanpur, and Kota markets recorded a decline of ₹35–40. However, when compared to June, prices are still stronger by ₹45–140 across all major centers.
★ The biggest challenge for the industry remains the sharp fall in wheat bran (choker) prices. The availability of DDGS (Dried Distillers Grains) has reduced demand for bran, severely impacting millers’ margins.
★ Various trade associations are urging the government to allow wheat bran exports to improve millers’ profitability. Given the weak domestic demand, even if exports are allowed, it may not have a significant impact on local prices.
★ So far, the government has not announced the OMSS (Open Market Sale Scheme). With upcoming festive demand, wheat consumption could rise further, leading to price increases. Meanwhile, DDGS production is expected to rise, which may worsen the situation for bran. Industry experts suggest the government should urgently look into opening bran exports to support millers.
