New Delhi. Given the progress in sowing and favorable weather conditions, the government is once again optimistic that wheat production will reach a new record level.

According to official data, the area under wheat cultivation in the current Rabi season had improved to 322.68 lakh hectares by December 26, which is 19,000 hectares more than the 322.49 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year and 10.33 lakh hectares more than the five-year average of 312.35 lakh hectares.

It is noteworthy that the total area under wheat cultivation at the national level reached a new record of 328.04 lakh hectares during the entire 2024-25 Rabi season, while the current season's area is still 5-6 lakh hectares behind that figure. The wheat sowing campaign has reached its final stage but is not yet complete.

The central government has set a target of 1711.40 lakh tonnes of total food grain production for the 2025-26 Rabi season,

which includes a target of 1190 lakh tonnes of wheat production. In the 2024-25 Rabi season, wheat production was estimated at 1179 lakh tonnes, which was a new record at the time.

The government is confident that the total area under wheat cultivation will reach the record level of the previous season, and with favorable weather conditions, the production target will also be easily achieved. This will ensure a smooth supply of wheat in the domestic market.
