New Delhi. During the current year, government procurement of wheat for the central pool reached close to 300 lakh tonnes, which was less than the target of 332.70 lakh tonnes but the highest after 2021. According to the data received, in the Rabi marketing season of the year 2021, a record 433.44 lakh tonnes of wheat was purchased by the government, but after this only 188 lakh tonnes in 2022, 262 lakh tonnes in 2023 and 266 lakh tonnes in 2024 could be purchased.
According to the information received, during the Rabi marketing season of the year 2025, government agencies have so far succeeded in purchasing a total of 299.20 lakh tonnes of wheat and now the procurement process is almost over. Only a small quantity of wheat is being occasionally received at some procurement centers in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. According to official sources, the government has sufficient stock of wheat to run the supply and market intervention scheme in the Public Distribution System (PDS) and other welfare schemes and necessary measures are also being taken to control the rise in its market price.
A trader from Rajasthan says that although there is limited arrival of wheat in the mandis now, it is not a matter of much concern because along with flour millers and traders, government agencies also have a good stock of it. The government purchase of wheat from farmers so far during the current year is 13 percent more than the same period last year. This year, a total of 404.20 lakh tonnes of wheat has been reported to have arrived in the major producing states so far.
This time, 119.30 lakh tonnes of wheat was purchased in Punjab, 77.70 lakh tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, 71.40 lakh tonnes in Haryana and 20.20 lakh tonnes in Rajasthan for the central pool. But in the country's largest producer state - Uttar Pradesh, only 10.20 lakh tonnes of wheat could be procured by the government, which is only one-third of the target set at 30 lakh tonnes.
