New Delhi, April 26, 2025 — Wheat supply in India is expected to remain stable and sufficient this year, supported by record production and robust government procurement. For the 2024-25 Rabi season, the Union Agriculture Ministry has projected wheat production at 1154.30 lakh tonnes, while the Flour Millers Federation of India has estimated it at around 1100 lakh tonnes — both figures marking new highs.
In comparison, wheat production for the 2023-24 season was estimated at 1132.90 lakh tonnes. The government’s ongoing procurement drive has already secured close to 200 lakh tonnes, significantly higher than last year’s figures for the same period.
The Food Ministry has set a national procurement target of 312.70 lakh tonnes this year, well above the 266.05 lakh tonnes achieved last year.
By April 24, procurement stood at 68.40 lakh tonnes in Punjab, 58.90 lakh tonnes in Haryana, and 56.50 lakh tonnes in Madhya Pradesh — all ahead of last year’s pace. Madhya Pradesh alone had procured 48.40 lakh tonnes during the entire previous Rabi marketing season.
Rajasthan has also seen a significant uptick, with 8.80 lakh tonnes procured so far, compared to less than 2.60 lakh tonnes in the same period last year.
Procurement targets for this season include 124 lakh tonnes in Punjab, 75 lakh tonnes in Haryana, 60 lakh tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, and 30 lakh tonnes in Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, wheat prices in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur mandi have reached ₹2600-₹2650 per quintal, suggesting strong arrivals of high-quality wheat.
However, Agmarknet portal data shows that average wholesale prices during the current month have remained between ₹2450 and ₹2500 per quintal.
Overall, with excellent production levels and strong procurement by both government agencies and private players, wheat supply and availability in India are set to remain smooth throughout the year.
