Yellow Pea Import Status Update in India
The Indian government had allowed duty-free imports of yellow peas until February 28, 2025. However, since no new circular was issued on February 28, the previous import regulations are now back in effect.
Previous Import Regulations:
- 50% import duty is applicable.
- Minimum Import Price (MIP) set at ₹200/kg.
- Imports are allowed only through Kolkata Port.
- Advance notification of imports is mandatory.
Reasons for Price Decline:
1. High stock availability at ports – Around 8-9 lakh tons of peas are in stock.
2. New crop arrivals – Increased domestic supply has led to price drops.
3. Impact of chickpea harvest – The new chana crop has reduced the demand for yellow peas.
Recently, after a minister's statement in a seminar regarding stopping pea imports, prices surged by ₹600/quintal. However, prices later stabilized as the market adjusted to availability and demand.
Future Outlook:
- Until port stocks are cleared in the market, price pressure will persist.
- Current prices are at their lowest levels and are expected to remain stable for some time.
- Towards the end of the season, as supply decreases, prices may see an upward trend.
