As of December 15, 2024, Maharashtra has produced 16.80 lakh tonnes of sugar from 207.41 lakh tonnes of sugarcane crushed across 183 mills.
This marks a decline in sugar production compared to the same period last year, when 24.85 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced from 258.30 lakh tonnes of sugarcane across 191 mills.
The drop in sugar production is attributed to a reduction in the average recovery rate from 8.4% in the previous season to 8.1% this season.
Maharashtra's total sugar production for the 2024-25 marketing season is estimated to be around 87 lakh tonnes, significantly lower than the 110.20 lakh tonnes produced during the 2023-24 season.
At the national level, the Federation predicts a decrease in sugar production from 319 lakh tonnes last season to 280 lakh tonnes this season.
The Sugar Commissionerate in Maharashtra reports similar figures, stating that as of December 15, 2024, 206.99 lakh tonnes of sugarcane was crushed, producing 167.81 lakh quintals (16.78 lakh tonnes) of sugar with an average recovery rate of 8.11%.
The report further breaks down sugar production by region, with the Kolhapur division showing the highest recovery rate of 9.53%. The number of operational mills across divisions varies, with Kolhapur, Solapur, and Pune leading in the number of mills.
