Pune. Latest data from the Central Water Commission indicates that reservoirs in the western and central regions of the country have sufficient water reserves, ensuring that irrigation for Rabi crops should not be difficult.
According to the Commission, 53 major dams and reservoirs in the western region currently have a stock of 36.297 billion cubic liters (BCM), representing 95% of their total storage capacity of 37.357 BCM. This provides sufficient water for drinking purposes, crop irrigation, and industrial purposes.
According to the Commission, nine dams and reservoirs in Maharashtra have water reserves equivalent to their full storage capacity, while at the provincial level, all dams have an average water stock of 96%. Water levels in Gujarat's dams have also risen to 94%, while Goa's sole reservoir is already full.
As for the central region, 28 major reservoirs have a water stock of 43,772 BCM, representing 90 percent of their total storage capacity of 48,588 BCM.
Dams in Madhya Pradesh have 93 percent water reserves, while those in Uttarakhand have 90 percent water reserves. The water level in Chhattisgarh's dams is estimated at 86 percent and in Uttar Pradesh's reservoirs at 76 percent.
The central region has not received significant rainfall for a long time, and the western zone also experienced a lack of rainfall last week.
On the other hand, water discharges from dams and reservoirs have been regular. Despite this, there is such a large water reserve that there will be no shortage for the next few months.
