Decline in Urad Market; Pressure Persists Due to Weak Demand

Chennai: During the current week, the Urad markets across the country witnessed a trend of one-sided decline. Due to a lack of buying interest and mounting selling pressure, prices remained consistently soft, resulting in a visibly weak overall market sentiment. Throughout the week, the demand for Urad dal remained relatively subdued. Buying activity by dal millers and processors remained limited due to sluggish consumption at both retail and wholesale levels. With millers making fewer purchases, the market failed to receive the expected support, consequently perpetuating the downward trend in prices. According to trade sources, no significant improvement in the consumption of pulses has been observed for some time now. The consumption of pulses is being adversely affected by inflation and a decline in consumer demand, which is having a direct impact on the Urad market. On the other hand, the ample availability of Urad at ports has also contributed to increasing pressure on the market. Amidst a continuous influx of imported goods and sufficient existing stocks, the lack of demand is disrupting the supply-demand equilibrium, thereby keeping the prospects of a market rally weak for the time being. Driven by increased selling pressure from importers and sluggish demand, Chennai Urad prices recorded a decline of ₹125–175 per quintal this week; following this drop, prices settled at ₹7,900 per quintal for FAQ grade and ₹8,525 per quintal for SQ grade Urad. Similarly, Mumbai Urad prices witnessed a decline of ₹100 per quintal this week, bringing the rates down to ₹7,900 per quintal by the weekend.
Burma
Due to increased selling by exporters and persistently sluggish export demand, Burma Urad witnessed a decline of $5 per tonne for FAQ grade and $15 per tonne for SQ grade during the current week. Following this decline, prices at the weekend stood at $840 per tonne for FAQ grade and $925 per tonne for SQ grade.
Delhi
Due to the impact of declining port prices and subdued buying activity from pulse millers, Urad prices in Delhi recorded a decline of ₹150–175 per quintal this week.
