New Delhi. America has announced to impose import duty of 26 percent on Indian products, due to which exports from India to its market are likely to be partially affected.
It is a matter of few days that 29 percent customs duty has been imposed on Pakistani products and 34 percent on Chinese products in America, compared to which the rate of duty on India is somewhat less. It has been decided to impose 25 percent import duty on Canada and Mexico.
It is worth mentioning that till now there was no customs duty on import of many Indian products in America, while some other products were subjected to 3 to 5 percent duty.
Due to this, many products were being exported from India there in a great way. Now there can be some hindrance in this and exporters may have to face challenges.
Actually, spices and cashew nuts have been exported to America on a large scale from India. In cashew nuts, Vietnam has already gone far ahead of India in the American market.
In its latest annual report on foreign trade barriers, the US Trade Representative has said that India has imposed high import duties on many items.
This includes 45 percent on vegetable oil, 50-50 percent on apples, corn and motorcycles, 60 percent on automobiles and clothes, 70 percent on natural rubber, 100 percent on coffee, raisins and walnuts and 150 percent on alcoholic beverages.
The report also says that the export of many other agricultural and processed food products will be affected due to high customs duty.
This includes poultry products, potatoes, citrus crops, almonds, apples, grapes, pecans, canned peaches, chocolates, cookies, frozen French fries and other prepared food products used in fast food restaurants.
The US has not imposed any higher tax on India compared to other countries, but still there will definitely be some impact on the exports from India to the US.
