In Madhya Pradesh, a key agricultural producer state in India, the sowing of major Rabi crops like wheat, barley, gram, lentil, peas, and mustard is underway. While some crops have shown progress, others are lagging behind their targets.

  • Wheat: The target for wheat sowing is 91.86 lakh hectares, but by 13 December, only 81.60 lakh hectares had been covered, resulting in a shortfall of 10.26 lakh hectares.
  • Barley: The sowing area has exceeded its target, with 41 thousand hectares planted against a target of 36 thousand hectares.
  • Gram (Chickpea): With a target of 20.52 lakh hectares, the area sown has reached 19.21 lakh hectares, falling short by 1.31 lakh hectares.
  • Lentil: The target for lentil sowing is 7.92 lakh hectares, and the actual area sown has reached 7.31 lakh hectares, a shortfall of 61 thousand hectares.
  • Peas: The target for peas sowing is 2.67 lakh hectares, but the area planted so far is 2.40 lakh hectares, resulting in a shortfall of 27 thousand hectares.
  • Mustard: The target for mustard sowing is 14.61 lakh hectares, and 12.16 lakh hectares have been sown by 13 December, leaving a gap of 2.45 lakh hectares.

Though sowing continues, the pace has slowed down, and while crops like barley, lentil, and peas are close to their targets, wheat and mustard may not reach their intended sowing areas. However, the attractive wheat prices could motivate farmers to increase sowing in the coming days.
