Brisbane. Lentil exports from Australia continue unabated. According to data from the government agency - Australian Bureau of Statistics,
lentil exports in April 2024 fell to around 1.17 lakh tonnes, which was recorded at 1.78 lakh tonnes in March and 1.24 lakh tonnes in February. In this way,
a total of about 4.18 lakh tonnes of lentils were exported from Australia in the three months from February to April 2024 and Bangladesh was its major buyer. India stood second and Sri Lanka at number three, while Pakistan was at number four.
According to the data of the Bureau, during the quarter of February-April 2024, about 1.51 lakh tonnes of lentils were exported from Australia to Bangladesh,
while 1,24,342 tonnes were shipped to India. India imported 65,576 tonnes of lentils from Australia in February, 32,870 tonnes in March and 25,897 tonnes in April. In fact, in March-April, due to the ongoing harvesting and preparation of domestic lentil crop, its import decreased.
Australia's government agency - ABARES has estimated domestic production of 16.50 lakh tonnes of lentils during the 2024-25 season,
which is equal to the production of 2023-24 season. ABARES says that although there has been some increase in the sowing area of lentils,
the average yield rate is likely to decline, so there will not be much fluctuation in the total production. Like Canada, most of the lentils are exported from Australia to foreign countries. Its new crop has started arriving there from October.
According to the data of the Bureau, during February-April 2024, 51 thousand tonnes of lentils were exported from Australia to Sri Lanka,
40 thousand tonnes to Pakistan, 20 thousand tonnes to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and 9 thousand tonnes to Nepal,
