Australian Lentil and Desi Chana Imports to India Continue

Brisbane. Harvesting and arrival of the new crop of chickpeas and lentils began in Australia last month, and there is strong demand in South Asian countries, primarily India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Data from the government agency, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), shows that lentil exports to India declined from 75,235 tonnes in September 2025 to 72,500 tonnes in October 2025.

In October 2025, Australia exported the highest amount of lentils to Pakistan (22,529 tonnes) and Bangladesh (22,500 tonnes), while 17,105 tonnes were shipped to India. During the previous season, Australia experienced a significant decline in lentil production, which also impacted exports.

According to the data received, the total export of lentils from Australia during November 2024 to October 2025 declined to 10,98,547 tonnes, which was much lower than the shipment of 14,06,307 tonnes during the same period of 2023-24 season.

On the other hand, during the same period, the export of Desi Chana jumped from 5,17,798 tonnes to a peak of 20,80,011 tonnes.

In October 2025 also, the export of Chana from there increased to 1,18,945 tonnes, which was much higher than the shipment of 27,279 tonnes in September.

During October 2025, 52,928 tonnes of Chana were exported from Australia to Pakistan, 40,641 tonnes to Bangladesh and 16,662 tonnes to India.

Chickpea production is expected to decline slightly during the current 2025-26 marketing season compared to the 2024-25 season, while lentil production is expected to increase significantly. Harvesting is nearly complete in most areas.
