06-Feb-2026 07:21 PM
New Delhi. Although the arrival of new black pepper has started at the production centers, the supply of new stock is not as expected due to a decrease in yield this year. In addition, there is currently no import. However, demand in the spot market is strong, due to which black pepper prices have recently increased by Rs. 10-15 per kg. Sources believe that the market will remain strong for now. Prices may decline somewhat after February 15th when arrivals increase in the markets, but a significant fall is not expected. Traders say that due to unfavorable weather conditions, black pepper production in the country this year is estimated at 55-58 thousand tons, while last year the Spices Board estimated production at 75-77 thousand tons. It is noteworthy that black pepper is mainly produced in Karnataka and Kerala. There is also some production in Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya.
According to available information, black pepper prices in the Cochin market have risen to Rs. 710-740 per kg, while the price in the Chikmagalur market is being quoted at Rs. 710. In Gwalior, the price of black pepper is being quoted at Rs. 740-745.
Imports
Due to low domestic production of black pepper, it is imported from countries like Vietnam and Sri Lanka. According to data released by the Spices Board, 48,085 tons of black pepper were imported during the year 2024-25 (April-March). In 2023-24, imports were 34,211 tons. Imports may increase further during the current season 2025-26.
Exports:
During the first eight months of the current season, black pepper exports registered a 5 percent decline in volume, while revenue increased by 20 percent due to higher prices. According to data released by the Spices Board, 12,926 tonnes of black pepper were exported between April and November 2025, generating revenue of ₹783.88 crore. In comparison, exports during the same period in 2024 amounted to 13,655 tonnes, with revenue of ₹651.04 crore.
