Regina. Canadian chickpea production is projected to increase by 15 percent to 331,000 tons in the current 2025-26 season compared to the 2024-25 season due to increased sown area and average yields. Harvesting preparations have already been completed.

According to the Department of Agriculture, chickpea production has increased this year compared to last year, both chickpea and desi varieties.

Due to high outstanding stocks, total chickpea availability is expected to increase by 21 percent. The Ministry of Agriculture has projected that Canadian chickpea exports will reach 200,000 tons during the current marketing season (August 2025-July 2026).

The United States and the European Union remain the top two buyers of Canadian chickpea, while exports are also being made to a few other markets.

Due to low domestic consumption in Canada, a significant increase in the final stock of chickpeas is expected, which could put pressure on prices.

The average chickpea price is estimated at $600 per tonne, significantly lower than last season. This is primarily due to the fact that Canada faces stiff competition in the global export market from countries like India, Mexico, the United States, and Argentina.

The second reason is that poor weather in Canada itself has significantly impacted chickpea quality. Meanwhile, in the United States, chickpeas were sown on 220,000 hectares (540,000 acres) this year, an 8% increase from last year.

Due to higher average yields, total production is expected to jump 32% to 234,000 tonnes, positioning it for better exports.
