Canadian Lentils Face Normal Market Fluctuations

Saskatoon. The Canadian lentil market is experiencing fluctuations due not only to global uncertainty and a strong influx of new supplies into Australia, but also to problems in Algeria, a key Canadian customer. This is likely to impact lentil imports there for some time.

Algeria primarily imports green lentils from Canada. The resulting lending crisis has caused the price of green lentils in the Canadian market to fall to around 25 cents per pound. However, there are still hopes that prices for high-quality goods will improve to 27 cents per pound in select areas.

Although some buyers are showing renewed interest in purchasing premium-grade No. 1 or Extra No. 2 lentils on an LGL basis, special attention is being paid to grain size and color. Stocks of this type of product are low, and therefore, there is little significant trading volume.

The Canadian red lentil market is being impacted by increased production in Australia and the arrival of a healthy supply of new stock. Price competition is also increasing.

Canada and Australia, both top exporting countries, as well as Russia and Kazakhstan, have seen robust lentil production this year, increasing supply in the global market.
