New Delhi. The season for plucking and preparation of new stock of small (green) cardamom in South Indian states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu and big (black) cardamom in Northeast parts has started but due to monsoon rains,

plucking of small cardamom is almost stopped at present. On the other hand, the crop of big cardamom has started maturing in the sub-Himalayan region of Sikkim, Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal.

In an auction held last day, about 47 tonnes of small cardamom cultivation was offered and buyers also showed good interest in buying it. As a result, the average auction price improved to a little above Rs 2908 per kg. In the previous auction,

the average price of small cardamom was recorded at Rs 2559.63 per kg. Due to heavy rains in the major producing districts of Kerala for the last few days, the plucking and preparation of cardamom is getting delayed. It is expected that its pace will increase from next month. There is also a possibility of some damage to the crop due to strong winds and heavy rains.

As far as big cardamom is concerned, the harvesting and preparation of its new crop is expected to start from mid-August. This time the rain situation has been normal in the major producing states, due to which the overall production can be satisfactory.

The business activities in the major auction centers have been sluggish in recent weeks, so the Disawari traders are not getting the right guidance.

The festive season will be formally inaugurated in August and then the domestic demand for small and big cardamom will start increasing gradually.

In view of this, there is a possibility of increased activity in the market. The stock of old goods is low in the producing centers, so the prices can remain strong till the arrival of new goods starts.
